CARMONN FRENCH

At times I will draw upon inspiration from the natural landscapes around us, and the inherent memories that we associate with them. My art is never devoid of a human element, I enjoy creating some sense of shared space between this intimate human presence and an almost romanticised notion of the Australian landscape. I grew up in rural NSW, this is why I need such a strong presence of the land within my works, to keep me tethered to my roots. My little viewing studio is located in Darlinghurst where I own and run my own gallery space. It’s important to me to honour each medium as it has its own unique language. My approach is rough, automatic and raw, expressive and bitterly romantic an obsession stemming from my father’s life as a stonemason, the ways in which he used natural resources to build up his own life had an effect on my relationship to texture in my work. My mother is responsible for my intuitive relationship to colour and mood.
